Do I need stainless steel? If your gas strut will be exposed to salt water, sea air, chlorine, rain or high humidity — yes, absolutely. Zinc plated will fail in these conditions.
Is A2 304 the same as A4 316? A2 304 is excellent for most outdoor use. A4 316 is even more corrosion-resistant, needed only for direct seawater contact. For 95% of applications, A2 304 is the right choice.
Is it the same size as zinc-plated? Yes — same DIN 71803 dimensions. Direct swap.
Is it worth the extra cost? Yes, if used outdoors. Zinc plated in marine use will rust and fail within 1-2 years. Stainless will last 10+ years.
