Gas Strut End Fittings Compatibility Guide: Ball Studs, Ball Joints, Clevis Fork Ends & Brackets Explained

Gas struts, brackets and linkages use several different connection types, and mixing them up is the most common reason a replacement part does not fit. Why fitting type matters more than force rating
When replacing a gas strut or fitting, it is tempting to focus only on force (Newton rating) and length. However, if the end fitting does not match, the strongest and best-sized gas strut in the world will not stay attached. Always identify the connection type on both ends of your gas strut before ordering.
The four main fitting types
1. Ball studs
A ball stud is a fixed metal ball, usually 8mm, 10mm or 13mm in diameter, mounted on a bracket, plate or panel. The gas strut's socket end pushes onto the ball and clips into place, giving a quick, tool-free connection that can still be released for maintenance.
Look for a ball stud fitting if: your gas strut has a plastic or metal socket end that clips onto a round ball.
2. Ball joint end fittings (sockets)
The ball joint, or socket, is the female half of the connection that clips onto a ball stud. These are commonly supplied as a separate spare part when the socket wears out or the retaining clip fails, without needing to replace the whole gas strut.
Look for a ball joint socket if: the gas strut itself is still in good condition but the clip-on end has worn, cracked or lost its grip on the ball stud.
3. Clevis fork ends
A clevis fork end is a U-shaped fitting secured with a pin and spring clip, typically used on gates, industrial linkages and heavier-duty applications where a more rigid mechanical pivot is preferred over a ball-and-socket connection. These are manufactured to the DIN 71752 standard in M6, M8 and M10 sizes.
Look for a clevis fork end if: your gas strut connects via a pin passing through a U-shaped fork and an eye, rather than a ball socket.
4. Mounting brackets and plates
Brackets and mounting plates are the fixing point between the ball stud, clevis fork or pin and the door, panel, gate or frame itself. These come in flat plates, L-shape angle brackets, side mount brackets, pivot hinge brackets and quick-release designs, in both zinc plated and stainless steel finishes.
Look for the correct bracket type based on: your available mounting surface, the required angle, and whether you need a ball stud, pin or clevis connection point.
How to identify what you currently have
- Remove the old part carefully, supporting the door, lid or gate as you do so.
- Check whether the end fitting is a socket that clips onto a ball, or a fork/eye secured with a pin.
- Measure the ball diameter (commonly 8mm, 10mm or 13mm) or the thread size (commonly M6, M8 or M10).
- Check the bracket plate size, hole spacing and mounting angle if the bracket also needs replacing.
- Choose zinc plated steel for general indoor and outdoor use, or stainless steel for marine, coastal or high-corrosion environments.
Matching fittings to common applications
- Cabinets, hatches and toolbox lids: usually ball stud and socket fittings for quick, tool-free removal.
- Ottoman beds: typically ball stud brackets matched to the gas strut's socket ends.
- Swing gates and gate closers: commonly clevis fork ends with a pin and spring clip for a secure, vibration-resistant pivot.
- Machine guards and industrial linkages: often clevis fork ends or pin-and-eye connections rated for repeated heavy-duty cycling.
- Vehicle bonnets and tailgates: usually ball stud fittings sized to the OEM specification for that model.
