Frequently Asked Questions

Gas Strut Basics

What is a gas strut?

A gas strut (also called a gas spring or gas lift) is a device filled with compressed nitrogen gas that provides a controlled force to lift, lower, and hold lids, doors, and hatches in position. They're used in car boots, bonnets, kitchen cabinets, ottoman beds, toolboxes, and more.

How do I know if my gas strut needs replacing?

Common signs include: your boot lid or bonnet drops suddenly or won't stay open, the opening action feels slow or uneven, or you can see oil residue or corrosion on the strut body. If any of these apply, it's time to replace them.

How long do gas struts last?

Automotive gas struts typically last 5–10 years depending on usage and conditions. Exposure to extreme temperatures, moisture, or heavy use will shorten their lifespan.

Choosing the Right Gas Strut

How do I find the right gas strut for my car?

The easiest way is to check the OEM part number stamped on your existing strut and search by that number. Alternatively, browse our collections by vehicle make: BMW, Volkswagen, Fiat, Porsche.

What does the Newton (N) rating mean?

The Newton rating is the pushing force of the strut. It must match the weight and geometry of the lid it supports. You can usually find this number stamped on the body of your existing strut. If unavailable, a rough guide is: (lid weight in kg × 10) ÷ number of struts, then add 20–30%.

How do I measure a gas strut?

Measure the extended length from the centre of one end fitting to the centre of the other. Also note the Newton force rating and the end fitting type (ball socket or pin). For a full guide, see our blog post: How to Measure a Gas Strut for Replacement.

Do I need to replace both gas struts at the same time?

Yes — always replace both struts together. They wear at a similar rate, so if one has failed the other won't be far behind. Replacing both ensures balanced support and prevents uneven stress on hinges. All our automotive struts are sold in pairs.

Can I use a higher Newton rating than the original?

Slightly higher is generally fine — if you're between two sizes, go higher rather than lower. However, a significantly higher Newton rating may make the lid difficult to close, so try to stay as close to the original as possible.

What end fitting types are available?

The most common types are ball socket (10mm or 13mm, clips onto a fixed ball stud) and pin/clevis mount (uses a pin through a bracket). Check your existing strut or mounting points to confirm which type you need. We also stock a full range of end fittings and mounting brackets separately.

Fitting & Installation

Can I fit gas struts myself?

Yes — replacing gas struts is a straightforward DIY job that requires no specialist tools. Most automotive struts simply clip onto ball studs at each end. See our step-by-step guide: How to Replace Gas Struts on Your Car.

What tools do I need to replace gas struts?

Usually just a flat-head screwdriver or trim removal tool to release the end fittings from the ball studs. No specialist tools are required for most applications.

My new gas struts feel very stiff — is this normal?

Yes, this is completely normal. New struts are fully pressurised and will feel firmer than worn ones. They'll settle slightly after a few uses and provide smooth, controlled operation.

Can I fit gas struts on furniture or cabinets myself?

Yes — most furniture gas struts are straightforward to fit. Ensure you match the extended length, Newton force, and end fitting type before ordering. If in doubt, contact us and we'll be happy to advise.
