Stabilus, SGS & NitroLift Gas Strut Replacement: How to Find the Right Match (UK Guide)
Share
Many gas struts fitted to beds, lids, cabinets, hatches and trailers in the UK were originally made by well-known brands such as Stabilus (including the Lift-O-Mat range), SGS or NitroLift. When one of these fails, you don't need the same brand to fix it. What you need is a gas strut with the same length, stroke, force and end fittings. This guide shows you how to find that match.
SpringFix UK is an independent supplier and is not affiliated with Stabilus, SGS or NitroLift. Brand names are used only to help you identify your existing part.
Step 1: Read the label on your old strut
Most branded struts have a printed label or stamp on the cylinder. Look for:
- The force in newtons, usually written as a number followed by N (for example 600N, 0750N or 1200N). This is the most important number.
- A part number, such as a Stabilus Lift-O-Mat code. Keep a photo of it: we can use it to help you check the match.
If the label has worn off, don't guess the force. Use our gas strut force calculator or send us a photo.
Step 2: Measure the length and stroke
- Extended length: with the strut fully open, measure from the centre of one end fitting to the centre of the other.
- Compressed length: measure again with the strut closed (or take it from the label or product listing).
- Stroke: extended length minus compressed length.
Common replacement lengths include 340mm, 360mm and 535mm for storage beds, and 735mm for trailers, canopies and large hatches.
Step 3: Match the end fittings
Check whether each end is an eye end, a ball socket that clips onto a ball stud, or a threaded end. If your brackets or fittings are worn, replace them at the same time. Our end fittings compatibility guide explains every type.
Step 4: Choose your replacement
- Ottoman and storage beds: 600N to 1200N struts in 340mm, 360mm and 535mm lengths. See ottoman bed gas struts.
- Heavy lids, trailers and canopies: 800N to 2000N struts, including 735mm with a 300mm stroke. See heavy duty gas struts.
- Cabinets, toolboxes and general use: browse all gas struts and gas springs.
- Fittings and brackets: end fittings and mounting brackets.
Lift-O-Mat vs Bloc-O-Lift
Stabilus Lift-O-Mat struts are standard push-type gas springs, the type used on beds, lids and hatches. Bloc-O-Lift is a lockable type used in adjustable furniture. The struts in our range are standard (non-locking) gas struts, so they are suitable replacements for standard push-type struts, not lockable ones.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy the same brand to replace my gas strut?
No. A replacement works when the length, stroke, force and end fittings match. The brand on the cylinder doesn't matter.
Should I replace both struts?
Yes. If your bed, lid or hatch uses two struts, replace them as a pair so they share the load evenly.
Can you check my old part number for me?
Yes. Send a clear photo of the label and the strut via our contact page and we will confirm the closest match before you order.
