How to Stop a Garden Gate Slamming: 5 Fixes That Work

A slamming garden gate is noisy, wears out the latch and hinges, and on a windy day it can bang all night. The good news is that it is usually a quick fix. Here are five fixes that work, from free to the permanent solution.

1. Check and Free Up the Hinges

Gates often slam because they drop on worn hinges and then swing hard into the post. Tighten loose screws, replace any bent or rusty hinges and add a little lubricant. A gate that hangs level and swings freely is much easier to control.

2. Fit a Gate Stop or Buffer

A rubber buffer on the post or a timber gate stop softens the impact. It won't stop the gate swinging shut fast, but it reduces the noise and protects the post.

3. Adjust or Replace the Latch

If the latch keep is misaligned, the gate bounces off it and gets pushed shut again harder. Realign the keep so the latch drops in cleanly.

4. Swap a Spring Closer for a Damped One

If you already have a coil spring fitted, it is probably the cause. Springs pull hardest at the end of the swing with no damping, so the gate accelerates into the post. See our comparison of gate closer springs, self-closing hinges and hydraulic closers.

5. Fit a Hydraulic Gate Closer (the Permanent Fix)

A hydraulic gate closer closes the gate at a steady, controlled speed so it shuts fully onto the latch without slamming – every time, in any weather. It also stops the gate being left open, which matters if you have children, dogs or a pool.

  • Soft, controlled close with an adjustable valve
  • Bracket holes to set the closing force for your gate
  • Suits wooden, metal and composite gates up to approx. 80kg
  • Bolts on in 30–45 minutes – see our fitting guide

Shop the M8 soft close gate closer or the M10 heavy duty gate closer. Orders placed before 16:00 Monday to Sunday are dispatched the same day with free UK delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my gate slam shut?

Usually because of a spring closer with no damping, worn or dropped hinges, or the wind catching the gate. A hydraulic closer controls the closing speed so the gate can't slam.

How do I make a gate close softly?

Fit a hydraulic (damped) gate closer and set it to the bracket hole nearest the post for a gentle close, then fine-tune with the valve.

Can I stop a gate slamming in the wind?

Yes – a hydraulic gate closer resists sudden movement and keeps the gate shut against the latch, so gusts can't swing it open and bang it closed.
